POSITION DETAILS

The Office of Government Affairs at The City University of New York (CUNY) ensures that the University's partnerships with the city, state and federal governments are strategically aligned. The Office is comprised of the Office of City Relations that works in collaboration with New York City's executive and legislative branches to advocate funding for programs and legislative action; and the Office of State Relations, located in Albany, New York that is responsible for advocacy related to the New York State budget. The Vice Chancellor for Government Affairs seeks a proactive, conscientious and well-poised professional to serve as the Confidential Executive Associate supporting University Government Affairs initiatives, especially ones focused on interacting with federal, state, and city governments, legislators, and public agencies.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides confidential managerial and administrative support to the Vice Chancellor.
  • Oversees the Vice Chancellor's complex calendar, scheduling travel and meetings with various University and external constituents and ensures that all commitments, responsibilities, and deadlines are met. Prepares and/or coordinates agendas, reports etc. in preparation for meetings.
  • Organizes meetings between CUNY officials and New York State and City elected officials.
  • Organizes key activities with the Office of Institutional Affairs, Strategic Advancement and Special Counsel, and university administration, such as budget and lobbying meetings with offices including campus government affairs offices.
  • Manages reporting activities, analyzes information, and assists with planning the office's operational, budgetary, and financial aspects to enhance the Office's effectiveness.
  • Documents, develops, and streamlines, as appropriate, administrative workflow processes. Manages confidential record keeping, distributing information, and other departmental functions within the Office of Government Affairs, and coordinates such with the Office of State Relations.
  • Manages departmental communication from the Office of Government Affairs, and coordinates such with the Office of State Relations.
  • Liaises regularly with internal and external constituents, and handles communications and situations in a professional and collegial manner. Attends regular and special meetings, events and functions with the Vice Chancellor.

NOTE: Until further notice, this position is eligible to work remotely and work on-site in the office.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required.

The ideal candidate will possess the following experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Six years' progressively responsible experience performing confidential high-level analytical, research, and administrative work supporting an executive in a higher education, public, non-profit or complex institution required.
  • Two years of legislative and state policy research, including tracking and analyzing state bills, and city budget allocations and bills related to the CUNY from NYS and NYC Executive budgets.
  • Ability to receive and resolve constituent requests from New York State and City elected officials.
  • Strong work ethic, character, and personal integrity to work with the utmost professionalism, confidentiality and discretion.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem solving and research skills; effective writing and editing skills.
  • Proactive, flexible, and customer-focused with the ability to take initiative, use sound judgment, and resolve problems diplomatically.
  • Demonstrated collaboration, relationship-building, presentation and interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders in a multi-constituency environment.
  • Ability to work productively as an individual contributor and collaboratively as a team member in a confidential, dynamic, time-sensitive and customer responsive office.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills to establish plans, prioritize work, manage multiple assignments and priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Computer proficiency using administrative, financial or academic programs, systems or databases.
  • Ability to travel and work evening hours as needed.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Supports a Campus or University Executive as a confidential assistant in a variety of activities and initiatives as a key team member.

  • Organizes and manages projects involving different areas of the Campus or University community, with responsibility for project outcomes
  • Represents the Executive's unit in Campus or University-wide activities, including committees, special initiatives, and implementation of new processes or technology
  • Independently carries out a portfolio of responsibilities under the Executive's purview, such as approvals, student interactions, and monitoring of key activities
  • Manages communications within and outside the unit related to areas of responsibility
  • May serve as Manager of a large Executive Office
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The salary range is $79,188 - $90,375; commensurate with education and experience.
