Cornell College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college, is seeking a part-time Lecturer in Philosophy for one course in Fall 2025 and for one course in Spring 2026. A Master's degree is required. A doctorate is preferred. Experience in the discipline of philosophy is required. Experience teaching philosophy is strongly preferred.
Course and term dates:
PHI 111 Introduction to Philosophy (Block 4: 11/17/25-12/17/25 and Block 7: 3/16/26-4/8/26 )- This course qualifies as a Writing Encounter. Course Description: this course explores the problems of philosophy as they are discussed in the writings of major philosophers, including, but not limited to, such topics as the nature of reality, problems with knowledge, social justice, ethical inquiry, how to live a life of meaning, etc. The course intends to foster an independent and inquiring attitude to fundamental beliefs; to begin a confrontation with both the perennial questions of the Western philosophical tradition and contemporary philosophical problems; to develop the intellectual attitudes necessary for a full engagement with important moral problems and consequently for ethical judgments; to practice and strengthen the abilities to formulate thought clearly and rigorously in both verbal and written communication.
Cornell’s One Course At A Time academic calendar is divided into eight 3½-week blocks in which students take and faculty teach a single course. The college encourages interdisciplinary interests among its faculty and the development of teaching strategies that capitalize on our distinctive academic calendar. Class size is limited to 25 students.
