Position: Director of Rowing/Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Performance Location: Newton Country Day School, Newton, MA

Reports to: Athletic Director Schedule:

  • Weekdays: 10:00 AM–6:00 PM (flexible as needed for athletic and school-wide events)
  • Evening or weekend hours as required for regattas or special events

Salary Range: $63,000-$73,000, commensurate with experience

Position Summary Newton Country Day School seeks an experienced and dedicated Director of Rowing/Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Performance. This dynamic role is designed to enhance the school’s athletic programming by leading the rowing program and overseeing sports performance initiatives. The ideal candidate will devote 50% of their time to developing and coaching the crew program and 50% to organizing and facilitating programming for fitness, strength and conditioning, and sports performance programming for all students and athletes. This is an opportunity to manage activities in the Fitness Center, maximize the use of the school’s boathouse on the Charles River, mentor student-athletes, and contribute to a holistic athletic experience aligned with the school’s mission to educate the mind, body, and spirit.

Position Responsibilities

Director of Rowing

  • Lead the Newton Country Day School crew program, serving as Head Coach on the water in the fall and spring seasons and providing support to the program in the winter.  
  • Develop and implement a structured training plan for rowers, ensuring skill development and competitive excellence.
  • Recruit, mentor, and supervise assistant coaches and support staff.
  • Organize team travel, regatta participation, and logistics for competitions.
  • Support Wellesley College, who shares our boathouse space, with the maintenance and management of rowing equipment, coordinating with the Athletics Department for necessary repairs and replacements.

Sports Performance Programming

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive strength and conditioning curriculum for student-athletes across all sports.
  • Coordinate and schedule fitness, strength, and conditioning sessions throughout the academic year. 
  • Provide hands-on instruction in fitness training, particularly during the winter season.
  • Work with the Health & Wellness Department to integrate injury prevention strategies, mental training, and wellness education.
  • Track and maintain records of sports credit totals of all students from 9-12th grade. 

Administrative and Leadership Responsibilities

  • Act as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches, families, and school leadership to ensure clear communication and alignment of athletic goals.
  • In conjunction with the Athletics Trainer, help manage any compliance needs with health, safety, and athletic regulations.
  • Oversee sports performance facility use, ensuring a safe and effective training environment.
  • Assist in the recruitment and hiring of coaching staff as needed.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Experience coaching rowing at the high school, collegiate, or club level.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to balance coaching responsibilities with sports performance program administration.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of Sacred Heart education.
  • Meet the physical requirements of the job (able to lift 20–50 pounds and comfortably bend, stretch, lift and move).

Required Certifications

  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Boating safety Certification (or willingness to obtain).
